Mahmoud Selim was the Regional Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Kobre & Kim, responsible for business development, strategy, and operations within the MEA region, in coordination with the firm’s global resources. Fluent in English and Arabic and proficient in French, Mr. Selim began practicing law in Cairo over 23 years ago. He joined Kobre & Kim from Matouk Bassiouny, where he was a partner and regional head of compliance and investigations, advising ultra-high-net-worth individuals, litigation funders, and multinational companies. Prior to that, he practiced at Pinsent Masons and Al Tamimi & Company. He also worked at the Egyptian Ministry of Justice, serving as a prosecutor and senior investigations magistrate, focusing on financial crime, counterterrorism, and international judicial cooperation. Mahmoud is a “Sharif” of the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraysh tribe. He is a 40th direct male descendant of Prophet Muhammad {PBUH} through the Prophet’s grandson, Al Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib bin Abd Al Muttalib bin Hashim. Through paternal bloodlines, Mahmoud shares common lineage and ancestry with the ruling families of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Kingdom of Morocco, as well as the abolished monarchies of the Kingdom of Hejaz, the Arab Kingdom of Syria, the Kingdom of Iraq, and the Kingdom of Libya. Through maternal bloodlines, Mahmoud’s lineage is from the Abu Steit branch of the Banu Juhaynah tribe, a nomadic Arab tribe and leading member of the Banu Quda’a confederation of Arab tribes. The Banu Juhaynah clan is still prevalent in the Arabian Peninsula, mostly in the region of Madinah and the cities of Yanbu, Umluj, Alshabaha, Tabuk, and Jeddah. It is also present in the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Mahmoud was called to the Egyptian Bar in 2002. Early in his career, he joined the Egyptian judiciary, where he was a senior prosecutor and an investigations magistrate, focusing on human rights, national security, financial crime, sentencing, transnational organized crime, and international judicial cooperation. During his time with the judiciary, Mahmoud served as the deputy attorney general and a member of the technical bureau of the attorney general, as well as the international judicial cooperation division. Mahmoud holds a PhD in Law from the University of London.
